3.20 The Interpretation of Taijiâs Lower Level Martial Aspects
The martial aspects of Taijiquan are: the external operations (i.e., actions) are gentle and soft while internally it contains the strength and hardness at the same time demanding the gentleness and softness internally. When gentleness and softness are manifested externally, after (practicing) for a long long time, then is able to be strong and hard internally. This is not caused due to the intention to be strong and hard, as a matter of fact, the intention is to be gentle and soft. What is the most difficult (thing to do) is to contain and store the strength and hardness internally without being applied (externally) while extremely gentle and soft when encountering the opponent. Use the gentleness and softness to respond with the strength and hardness and make the (opponentâs) strength and hardness dissolved into nothingness. But how can (we) achieve this goal? (You) must have accomplished the training of attaching, adhering, connecting, and following and be able to feel the movement sensitively, then (you) have gained Understanding Jin, afterwards, you can reach the enlightenment spiritually. (When this happens), (your) neutralization has reached an extremely high level. If (you) do not know the marvelousness of using four ounces to repel a thousand pounds and the achievement is not yet reaching the level of neutralization, then how can (you) reach (the final goal of practice)? This is what is called, âunderstanding the attachment of the movementsâ until (you) have gained the tricky keys to sensitivity in seeing and listening (i.e., skin feeling).
